We seek a highly organized and motivated laboratory technician to work in an academic research laboratory in New York City.
Candidates with a research background and recent Masters Degree are preferred; Biology or Bioinformatics majors with at least an undergraduate degree are also encouraged to apply.
This position requires a focused, analytical mind, comfortable at handling large numbers of biological samples and datasets as well as learning new statistical tools.
Basic computer skills, including familiarity with word processing and spreadsheets are a necessity. The daily functions include processing of DNA/RNA from biospecimen, PCR, gel electrophoresis, genotyping, Sanger Sequencing, lab upkeep, organization of materials, assisting researchers with experiments including cell culture, documenting procedures accurately etc. However, programming skills would be a plus (perl /python). Beginner’s level understanding of Biostatistics is desirable.
The successful applicant will perform daily lab duties associated with projects using molecular genetic techniques to study human genetic variation in diseases in a research laboratory setting. Previous technicians have been authors on research manuscripts and abstracts by making substantial contributions to projects, and have gone on to medical or graduate school.
Commonly used techniques include DNA or RNA extractions, DNA quantitation, gel electrophoresis, PCR , Taqman and Sequenom genotyping, Sanger and nextgeneration sequencing, among others. Initial training will be provided.
The position involves working with other technicians and scientists; therefore, we seek someone who is friendly, cooperative, and flexible, along with having good technical and organizational skills. He or she should keep meticulous lab notes, be capable of working independently, as well as with the group, and be reliable and responsible enough to take care of general laboratory maintenance with minimal supervision.
Individuals who have a Bachelor in Information Technology or programming who want to learn genomics are also encouraged to apply for short term paid internship. The term is for 2-3 months. You will be instructed on running DNA sequencing and annotation pipelines, writing scripts and workflows related to genomics. Basic understanding of UNIX is essential, R or Python are preferred.
