Neuroimmunological disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) lead to a spectrum of psychiatric and neurological symptoms, and often affect children and you adults. Both viral and autoimmune encephalitis can cause long term neurological deficits in a substantial proportion of patients. Despite this, relatively little is known about the underlying disease mechanisms leading to neuronal dysfunction and neuronal loss.
My research focusses on the development and application of different cell populations of the CNS in vitro for disease modeling of neuroimmunological disorders using human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). Through the study of neuronal and nonneuronal cell populations of the CNS and their interaction in vitro, we will be able to identify both cell-autonomous and cell non-autonomous disease mechanisms.
