The Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences’ fourth Biennial Retreat will take place from May 6 through May 7, 2016, at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York.

The retreat will celebrate the first decade of matriculants in GSK’s graduate program. Thomas J. Kelly, MD, PhD, an internationally recognized MSK scientist whose research efforts have focused on how the genome is duplicated during the eukaryotic cell cycle will be the keynote speaker. His talk is entitled “DNA Replication, Mutation, and Cancer.”

Dr. Kelly, formerly director of the Sloan Kettering Institute, was the founding Provost of the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He is the current incumbent of the Benno C. Schmidt Chair of Cancer Research and heads a laboratory at MSK. Dr. Kelly is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.

GSK alumni were invited to attend the retreat in commemoration of their achievements while at GSK and after their graduations. During the two-day celebration, a number of GSK students, alumni, and faculty members will lead scientific sessions. The program also includes outdoor group activities. “This year’s retreat falls on the ten-year anniversary of our first matriculated class and will allow participants to reflect on the school’s first decade,” says Kenneth J. Marians, the founding and current Dean of GSK.  “It offers a perfect blend of science and camaraderie in a relaxed, off-campus setting.”

GSK has matriculated more than 110 students and following Commencement in May 2016, the alumni roster will grow to 37, a testament to GSK’s success as one of the premier graduate schools of biomedical sciences in the nation.

The retreat committee included GSK students Emily Casey and Neel Shah; GSK alumni Moriah Nissan and William Walkowicz; and GSK faculty members Maria Jasin, PhD and Joseph Sun, PhD.

Past Biennial Retreat keynote speakers were Mina J. Bissell, PhD, Marc W. Kirschner, PhD, Richard O. Hynes, PhD, FRS, and Todd R. Golub, MD.
